Swoffers’ involvement in island life was vividly demonstrated recently when we handed over equipment for the elderly. Part of the proceeds of the Swoffers Ball was offered to the WRVS and the organisation decided to use the £1,000 donation for the purchase of some specially-adapted chairs. Following the eagerly awaited arrival of the easy chairs, elderly users of The Russels Day Centre can now relax in more comfort. ‘We are absolutely thrilled to bits with the £1,000 from Swoffers and they were kind enough to let us choose what equipment could be bought. The chairs were a natural choice because we already had a few and knew how popular they were. ‘We definitely needed some more’ said WRVS organiser Claire Winter. The new acquisitions have been put into the main day room. The centrally situated day centre is a popular meeting spot for people who might not otherwise enjoy much social contact. The premises, at Les Cotils, are manned by volunteers who arrange talks, exercise classes and hobbies, as well as organising lunch. ‘We have a great team of helpers and supporters but our list of things to do is long so any extra help is much appreciated,’ said Mrs Winter. Swoffers’ Managing Director Matthew Henry said the company was delighted to support such a worthwhile local charity. ‘When we were organising our Ball, we appealed to local groups to tell us about projects or funds that needed support and the WRVS presented a strong case. We raised more than £5,000 and were able to donate £1,000 for this charity. I am delighted that the money has been put to such practical use,’ he said. |
